What we do

kittens

In one sentence...

We help homeless animals!

They arrive at our door by various ways – abandoned, unwanted, neglected, stray or feral. We at the Animal Hostel Trust try to help them all.

And we will never put a healthy animal to sleep!

But we are only a small, voluntary organisation with limited means and accommodation, so - unfortunately - only able to help a limited number of animals.

Please contact us for help only if you are within our local area of Haringey and Enfield (see FAQ for details).

We will always do our very best to help directly, however, depending on capacity at the cattery, we will not always be able to take on further animals. Should this be the case, with our wealth of connections, we are always able to provide alternative contacts.

Daily Work

Our daily work is always varied - take a look at some typical cases. We specialise in catching and caring for feral and timid cats, and then trying to rehome them. Our cattery team invests a great deal of time in taming down the more timid cats for rehoming. Our general policy with wilder, feral cats is to return them (after their neutering operation) to their site of origin - ensuring that they are fed and monitored from then on (usually by kind local residents). If this is not feasible, then we rehome them either in suitable places like working stables, where they are useful mousers and ratters, or in special sanctuaries.

Once again, we never destroy a healthy animal, regardless of its circumstances.

Take a look at how we helped a whole colony of ferals in one of London's most notorious estates.

Reiki Healers

In very special cases, for example, when an animal is so traumatised that it becomes suicidal and refuses to eat, or an animal that is grieving for the loss of its owner, we call on the assistance of Reiki Healers. This is considered absolutely pioneering in our line of work, and the mental reaction/response from the animal is incredible to witness.

The healers work with us on a voluntary basis and are therefore not always available for immediate assistance to an emergency. We are always keen to hear from qualified healers who wish to offer their voluntary services.

History

The Animal Hostel Trust is an independent organisation that has evolved over the last 30 years, founded by people working for the benefit of the local animals in Haringey and Enfield, North London.

Having founded a branch of the Cat Action Trust in Haringey, our founder, Yvonne Treon, was involved in pioneering work in Haringey that helped to save hundreds, if not thousands, of feral cats from death – prior to this, pest control units within the local government destroyed feral cat colonies.

Having proved a success in providing a humane means of controlling the unwanted animals, the organisation was asked to combine forces with the RSPCA and take over the running of the North East London Branch of the RSPCA. This arrangement continued for some years before we de-merged, and the Animal Hostel Trust was established, with its headquarters and catteries in Palmers Green, North London.
